Driver arrested following fatal hit-and-run on Seward Hwy
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A woman has been arrested following a hit-and-run incident Friday night that killed a pedestrian at the intersection of East Benson Boulevard and the Seward Highway.
According to a public alert from the Anchorage Police Department, officers responded to a man lying in the middle of the road around 10:30 p.m. Friday. He was declared dead at the scene, according to the statement.
In an updated alert Saturday afternoon, police wrote that they have arrested the driver, 22-year-old Angel Green, who has been remanded to the Hiland Correctional Facility on a charge of failing to render aid.
Police initially said the circumstance of the collision was still under investigation, but that a preliminary investigation suggested the man was struck by a vehicle and the driver fled the scene. They wrote in the updated release that, depending on the results of a toxicology test and further investigation, more charges could be forthcoming.
Police are asking for anyone who witnessed the crash and did not stop to speak to officers to contact the department dispatch at 311 (option No. 1). Police are also asking anyone who was in the area at the time and may have captured the suspect’s vehicle on video to contact them.
The identity of the man who died will be released after police finish notifying his family.
All south-bound lanes of the Seward Highway between Northern Lights Boulevard and Benson Boulevard were initially closed late Friday night and police asked drivers to use alternate routes. The highway was reopened by 3 a.m. Saturday.
